Ephesians 4:25—Honesty
God addresses the subject of honesty with two commands. First, “Put away lying.” Whether it is a complete lie, a partial lie, a lie by exaggeration, or a lie by omission a lie is still a lie. Second. “speak every man truth.” (See Matthew 5:37) God tells us why truthfulness is important. “We are members one of another.” Relationships must be built on trust, and trust is built on honesty.
Ephesians 4:29-30—Profanity or Edification?
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.” Whether it is condemnatory profanity, sacrilegious profanity (using words that have a religious meaning and using them as profanity), sexual profanity (using “double meaning” or sexual function as profanity), scatological profanity (excretory waste), anatomical profanity, or taking the Lord’s name in vain (Exodus 20:7) as a meaningless exclamation or an expletive, corrupt speech does not honor God. God calls disciples of Jesus to “edify” and “minister grace” through their speech in such a way that does not “grieve the Holy Spirit of God.”
Matthew 12:34-37—Your Tongue and Your Heart
The root issue of the tongue is the heart. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh (12:34).” The fruit of the tongue reveals the heart (12:35). No wonder Jesus warned that our words will one day be judged (12:36) that our words will condemn us or justify us (12:37)!
